2001 IOTA SIGMA PI GLADYS ANDERSON EMERSON SCHOLARSHIP

Jovana Grbic, Northwestern University   

Jovana is a junior Chemistry/Biochemistry major. According to her nominator, Dr Hilary Arnold Godwin, Jovana is "always well-prepared, enthusiastic, and was constantly asking questions. She is passionate about scientific research and has exceptional communication skills, intellectual capabilities and the drive of an exceptional graduate student." In addition to a high GPA, Jovana has accomplished an impressive amount of research. Her research involves a series of analytical ultracentrifugation studies to study the association of neurological proteins. Dr Godwin considers Jovana "truly exceptional and shows every promise of becoming a first rate independent scientist." The results of her research have been presented in a publication and at the ACS National Meeting in spring 2001. Jovana is a member of several prominent chemistry organizations at Northwestern. She is the professional chair of Alpha Chi Sigma, being responsible for bringing prominent chemists and biochemists to campus for talks, as well as initiating and organizing faculty presentations for the student body. Furthermore, Jovana is the cofounder of the Alpha Chi Sigma Award for Outstanding Professor, the only teaching award presented at Northwestern. Jovana is also the Director of the Science Outreach Program in Education (ScOPE), a project of the Northwestern University Undergraduate Chemistry Council. ScOPE is a teaching exchange wherein NU undergraduates visit local elementary and junior high schools and perform demonstrations with mini-lectures in chemistry as well as full-fledged chemistry teaching sessions with mini-lab kits. In addition to the Gladys Anderson Emerson Scholarship, Jovana is a three times recipient of the Maxwell Family Foundation Scholarship, the Wolfstein Family Fellowship Grant, the Elisaveta Ducevic Fellowship Grant and two times recipient of Northwestern University Undergraduate Research Grant.
