synthesis of dimerization inhibitors of therapeutically significant enzymes such as of HIV-1 protease and integrase. An ultimate goal of her work is the inhibition of transcription factor/DNA interactions by specifically disrupting the protein-protein interactions of dimeric transcription factors. Another project is the design of a unique self-replicating peptide system that is sensitive to environmental conditions and can reproduce only under extreme conditions. In Dr. Chmielewski's lab, a new liposome has been prepared that achieves a pH-dependent cargo unloading within the low-pH environment of cellular endosomes. The liposomes are designed to be cell target specific and the liposomal contents are released specifically within cancer cells. Dr. Chmielewski's group has developed peptide shuttles that not only facilitate the cytoplasmic delivery of small molecule and peptidic agents, but also efficiently promote the uptake of these agents into the

nucleus, the side of action for numerous anticancer therapeutics. Another project involves the synthesis, in one step, of stable five-, six-, and seven-helix bundle structures from peptides with sixteen amino acid residues. In Dr. Chmielewski's lab, a wide range of biopolymers has been isolated

within host crystalline

matrices of biominerals. The folded states of the proteins within the matrices have been confirmed and their thermal stability demonstrated.

Dr. Chmielewski has over forty-eight publications and four book chapters or review articles. She has given eighty-four invited lectures. Dr. Chmielewski has obtained almost 3.5 million dollars in funding in seventeen grants and fellowships. Twenty-seven graduate students, thirteen undergraduates and three postdoctoral assistants have worked with Dr. Chmielewski. She received the Arthur E. Kelly Award for Excellence in Teaching. and was named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and an Exxon Foundation Fellow. The National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health have recognized her research. She serves on the Editorial Boards of Chemical and Engineering News and the Journal of Peptide Chemistry.

Los Angeles Area

ISP Members at Large

Jodye Selco is trying to reactivate the Sulfur Chapter of Iota Sigma Pi. Jodye would like Los Angeles Members at Large to contact her. She has talked with a number of Iotans in the area, and they share her enthusiasm for beginning chapter activities. Sulfur could follow the model of other large chapters with activities across their geographical areas. If there is sufficient interest, the formal reactivation of the Sulfur chapter will begin through the National Council. Jodye Selco may be reached at University of Redlands, Department of Chemistry, PO Box 3080, Redlands CA 92373-0999, and by email at selco@uor.edu

Iotans Participate in ACS Symposium on Women

in San Diego

Several Iotans presented papers in the symposium "Chemists in the New Millennium", organized by the chair of the Women Chemists Committee, F. K. Wood-Black. Featured speakers presented their perspectives on ChemCensus 2000's data related to women chemists, highlighting the progress indicated as well as the challenges for the future. Papers in the symposium covered the status of women in chemistry as a whole, in academics, and in industry.

Nina M. Roscher (Cm) presented, "Data on Women Chemists: A Historical Perspective". Carolyn Ribes presentation was "Marie Curie as a Corporate Fellow: WhatWill It Take toGget There?". Ribes found "that it is very difficult to find out how women are progressing on technical vs. management ladders." She "was able to obtain data within my company but not from other companies. I found that women enter the leadership levels in Analytical Sciences at the same rate as men, but they are more likely to be managers than technical leaders."

Donna J. Nelson (National Vice President) reported the results of her survey on the top 50 chemistry departments in the US, ranked by NSF according to chemical research expenditures. Her paper was entitled, "Strategies for Increasing Women and Minorities in Academia". One of the surprising findings was the very low numbers of minorities on the faculties of these universities at a time when the number of graduating minority Ph.D.'s is increasing. Nelson commented, "I expected to find a low number of African American Assistant Professors. I did not expect to find none. Even though the African American faculty had predicted to me that there might be none, I was astonished." A complete report of the survey is available on her web site at

http://cheminfo.chem.ou.edu/faculty/djn/diversity/table2.html

and ....... /table3.html

The summary of her results are in the table below.

Janet Clark (Cl Chapter) had her first patent issue on Jan. 30, 2001. US 6179994 is titled Isoparaffinic Base Stocks By Dewaxing Fischer-Tropsch Wax Hydroisomerate Over Pt/H-Mordenite. Janet is a senior chemist at ExxonMobil Process Research Laboratories in Baton Rouge, LA.

Darleane C. Hoffman (H Chapter) Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, received the 2000 Harry and Crol Mosher Award of the Santa Clara Valley Section of The American Chemical Society. in January, 2001. At her award dinner she presented a talk entitled, "The Long-Sought Super Heavy Elements (SHEs) - One-Atom-at-a-Time Nuclear Chemistry." Hoffman also went on a week-long lecture trip in late March to several Texas universities. Her speaking tour was sponsored by the Welch Foundation.

Amherst newspapers, and on the Sweet Briar College web site.

Parents dropped off their girls off for a total of five hours. Some parents and troop leaders stayed to observe and to enjoy the cafeteria lunch. In addition to being a good break for parents, Jill credits part of the turnout to good timing of the event. It was a fun way to spend a cold and rainy Saturday in January! The basic ideas for the activities in chemistry, biology and physics were adapted from the Brownie Handbook. They included

- growing crystals - black construction paper worked faster than the

usual string

- making recycled paper - it was worth the intensive preparation effort.

- blowing up balloons with CO2 formed by reaction of baking soda with vinegar

- making gloop from cornstarch and water - a messy but fun experience

- performing paper chromatography separation of marker colors

- making bubbles

- a seed sprouting race

- carrying out light and color

Earlier this year, the Lanthanide Chapter of Iota Sigma Pi brought science to young girls in a way that serves as an excellent model of a successful chapter activity. On January 20, 2001, a Brownie Science Try-It Day was held at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. The efforts were led by Jill Granger, Assoc. Professor of Chemistry, Sweet Briar College, and Lanthanide chapter president. Twelve members of the Lanthanide Chapter and students participated in the Science Try-It Day.

In attendance were 28 first - third grade girls from three Brownie Troops and a number of parents and troop leaders. The girls engaged in a several hands-on activities, earning two Brownie badges in Science Wonders and Science in Action. The girls also started work on a third badge in Plants. The activities were followed by lunch in the Sweet Briar

easier to track completion of all of the activities. The girls had fun with science and also worked hard to earn their badges. Earning nearly three badges in a single day is a significant accomplishment; usually it takes a month to earn a single badge.

In organizing the event, the Lanthanide members made it easy for everyone to be involved. Science Try-It Day ran smoothly, and the activity leaders, observers and the girls had fun. For more information, contact Jill Granger directly at granger@sbc.edu.

Jill has some great organizational advice for chapters. Individual activities were set up on dining

hall tables. As the organizer, Jill did not direct an activity herself, but was free to answer questions,

trouble shoot, take pictures and direct the students among the activity tables. Two other Lanthanide members took care of registration and check-in and then served as roaming assistants. The girls were assigned to groups of 3 or 4 with colored name tags. Color-coordinated 3x5 cards with the students' names were initialed by the activity leaders once each girl completed the activity, making it
