Greetings from the 1999 - 2002 National Council
|
Iota Sigma Pi National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry
PresidentSusan S. Marine
(The following is the acceptance speech given when Susan Marine was installed as National President at the 26th National ISP Triennial convention.)
Thank you for bestowing on me the honor of being President of Iota Sigma Pi for the next three years. As we approach the end of our first century of fellowship and promoting women in chemistry and sciences closely related to chemistry, our theme of Reach Out! seems most appropriate.
The honors many of our members have rightfully achieved serve as glowing beacons that not only mark our past but also light our way to the future. The mission of Iota Sigma Pi, as defined in our mission statement, is to promote professional development and personal growth of women in chemistry and related fields through recognition, public outreach, and the formation of supportive networks. As President, I alone cannot accomplish this mission. My role is to encourage and stimulate members to diligently pursue our objectives.
The committees that convened during the 1999 national convention have provided direction toward these objectives through their recommendations and motions, including the following: A new chapter position called Membership Affairs Coordinator has been formed to increase recruitment of new members. A Chapter Revitalization Award (CPR) will be given triennially to recognize chapters that are newly activated or reactivated during the triennium. A Centennial Activities Coordinator will coordinate chapter and national activities to celebrate ISP's centennial anniversary. To increase the visibility of Iota Sigma Pi, a poster will be designed and distributed, our web site will be updated and expanded by the web master and a committee of helpers, and chapters are encouraged to inform the news media, including the Iotan and C&E News, of accomplishments of their members. |
It is up to us (Indeed, it is one of the things we can and should do.) to be sure that the accomplishments of our colleagues are duly registered in the minds of as many others as possible. That knowledge often Reaches Out further than we know and may help encourage new and talented young women into this exciting field we have chosen.
It is up to us to hold these beacons high and to Reach Out, to reflect the lights of others for all to see what women can achieve. Join with me in this endeavor as we complete the first century of Iota Sigma Pi.
Vice-President Donna Nelson
I am an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, OK. I am a native Oklahoman who obtained my Ph. D. at the University of Texas at Austin, did my Post-Doctorate at Purdue University with H.C. Brown, and came back to Oklahoma in 1983 to accept a faculty position for research and teaching in Organic Chemistry. I have one child; he is a senior in high school this year, and intends to be a scientist.
It is certainly an honor being elected National Vice President of Iota Sigma Pi. I look forward to getting to know many of you as I take on the duties of that office. When I attended the National Convention in Portland, OR, it was great to present two papers on my research to so many intelligent, energetic, and impressive women. I gathered a great many new ideas and perspectives. I thoroughly recommend it for all women in chemistry.
|
Susan S. Marine National President
These and many other recommendations require that we Reach Out to others in our chapters to promote their careers, Reach Out to our local chemistry organizations with joint activities and meetings, and Reach Out nationally to promote women in chemistry.
The beacons raised by our predecessors and our current models were not lit and did not shine without a lot of hard work, initiative, encouragement, and mentoring. Singing the praises of those who excel and achieve shines the light of their beacons brighter on all of us.
In 1997 I had the opportunity to take a class of college students to Europe to study the history and foundations of chemistry. One of the most memorable tours was of Marie Curie's laboratory in Paris. Marie Curie stands out as a beacon due to her outstanding achievements in chemistry at a time when women were not expected or allowed to work in the physical sciences. It was very enlightening for both the male and female students in our group to learn about her accomplishments, but it was only through the knowledge of the adversities she had overcome that their minds were opened and they truly understood the extent of what she had accomplished.

Editor Sharon Vercellotti
As Editor of The Iotan, I view my role as an agent for communication. I would like to continue to increase member communication. We have recently added a Science Feature Editor, Dawn Norman, to include articles of scientific interest to the membership. Our other Feature Editors are Chris Rener, Gretchen Shearer and Margaret Workman. Please contact these editors with your ideas and articles. Send your Member News to me. Your activities and honors are important for all Iotans to know. The email addresses are elsewhere in this issue. Thank you for allowing me to continue as Editor. The position has allowed me to fully appreciate the outstanding membership of Iota Sigma Pi. I look forward to receiving your news.
HistorianAnne T. Sherren
Greetings from your National Historian. Best wishes to all Iotans for success in your personal and professional lives. I hope that we will have a good triennium as Iotans.
The National Historian has two big duties: (1) to store the archives of the society. I need your help. Please send me pictures and information about members and chapters. If you have copies of old Histories or old Iotans that you no longer want, please send them to me. I will reserve the right to keep them if we need them to fill in gaps in the Archives. (2) To compile and prepare The Centennial History of Iota Sigma Pi. If you have pictures that you feel will be suitable for the Centennial History, please send them to me. This will be a busy triennium as all of us we are preparing for the Centennial Celebration. As my committee and I update the chapter histories we will be contacting the chapters and individuals to see if we missed something. Thanks to all of you who have sent me materials I needed. I do get copies of the National Vice-President's Chapter Activities reports. I always like getting copies of the chapter newsletters. It is interesting to see what you are doing. I know that 3 chapters use e-mail to distribute their news. If you have a special interest in doing compiling, editing, or writing, please contact me.
Let us all work together for a better Iota Sigma Pi!

Secretary Janet Clark
I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent on a local level with Iota Sigma Pi both in the Plutonium Chapter, where I was initiated, and in the Chlorine Chapter where I currently reside. I look forward enthusiastically to serving as National Secretary. I was honored to be nominated and elected to National Council and will aspire to give back to the organization what it has given me. I have held several offices in the past and recognize the importance of communication between the chapters and National Council. Efficient and timely communications on important decisions, new developments and deadlines concerning chapter operations will help maintain chapter vitality and familiarity. I look forward to helping maintain the infrastructure of our organization and work to continue the excellence as we move forward to our Centennial Celebration.
Please feel free to contact me with questions, problems or comments. I also encourage you to use email for communications between your chapter and with National Council. Electronic communication is extremely convenient and economical. Chapter officers can expect to receive a mailing containing initiation material from me in September. Initiation forms are available electronically as well. I am easily reached by email, fax or phone and can read most email attachments.
It was wonderful to meet many new friends at the convention and I look forward to communicating with many more of you as well during this next Triennium. |
Treasurer Kathryn Louie
It was a pleasure to meet many of you at the 26th Triennium in Portland. I am pleased to be able to serve as your National Treasurer for the next three years. I would like to take this opportunity to report that ISP is financially healthy. This fiscal health is due in large part to the generosity of the membership and to the outstanding job of our former treasurer. I will continue with and build on what she has accomplished.
My main tasks as National Treasurer will be handling the dues of each member and sending rebates to each chapter. Please send your chapter financial reports to me by October to receive your rebates. When you pay your dues, please consider supporting the two categories you will find on your does notice. The first category is the Awards Fund. It is important that this fund continue to grow so that ISP can continue to recognize the accomplishments of its many outstanding women chemists. The second category is the Centennial Fund. The next triennial convention will be in 2002, which will also be the year of our centennial. This fund will be used to help in our having a spectacular celebration during the convention. We also are asking for volunteers from our members who have fundraising experience to help in a concerted effort to raise funds to help celebrate this milestone. We would like to mark this occasion with special activities at both the local and national levels.
I look forward to working with each of you during the next three years. Please do not hesitate to contact me.

new friends at the Triennial Convention in Portland.
I am pleased to be serving as National Records Chair for the 1999-2002 triennium. Your records are kept on a Gateway P5-90 Pentium Computer using MS Office Access database.
Is Your Address or Phone Number Changing? I would like to continue keeping the chapter records as current as possible so that all active members are included in the mailing of The Iotan. Let me know of any errors in the 1999 Directory or any changes in your address, phone number or area code, e-mail address, or chapter affiliation.
Do You Need a Chapter Directory? Telephone [(715) 268-4632, May-October or (941) 466-8381, October-May] or e-mail (lapafish@hotmail.com) if you would like a directory of your chapter members whose dues are current and a set of mailing labels for sending the directory to your chapter members.
Do You Need Mailing Labels? If you are trying to boost attendance at chapter events or other scientific meetings or if you want to network with Iotans in your geographic area, lists of active members in given zip code areas can be generated. Zip code lists of members who became inactive sometime in the last few years can also be generated.
Deceased Members Please let me know whenever a member of ISP passes away. Entry of a death date into the computer stops the generation on mailing labels.
I hope to be of great assistance in making your job in the chapter easier in the 1999-2002 Triennium.
Coordinator of Members-at-Large Kathryn Thomasson
I am pleased to be able to serve you as the Members at Large Coordinator. I will do my best to follow the inspiring examples of my predecessors, and I'm very grateful that Bonnie Gordon is willing to mentor me through the transition. I believe it is important to maintain communications among the MAL's and other Iotans. The newsletter will be critical for this, and I am planning on continuing the quarterly format that Bonnie has established. I also welcome emails, letters and phone calls; lets network! We can establish a springboard for your sharing your news with everyone.
The MALs will continue to sponsor the MAL Scholarship for a woman returning to college and majoring in chemistry after a significant interrup |
tion of her studies. Our goal is to create enough capital so that by using only the interest the award can be given and we wish to increase the value of the award we give each year. We have seen many wonderful women win this award in the past nine years and we would not only like to continue to recognize and encourage their achievements, but also to increase the compensation because all our applicants have really earned it!
Director for Professional Awards Christine K. F. Hermann
I am looking forward to serving as the National Director for Professional Awards for the next triennium.
In this capacity, I will be soliciting nominations for the professional awards of National Honorary Member, the Award for Professional Excellence, and the Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award. All three of these awards are awarded to outstanding women. The National Honorary Member is awarded once every three years, during a convention year. This award is for exceptional and significant achievement in chemistry or a related field as to merit international recognition. The Award for Professional Excellence is also awarded once every three years, during a convention year. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to chemistry or a related field and will be judged on significance of accomplishments in academic, governmental, or industrial chemistry, in education, in administration, or in a combination of these areas. The Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award is awarded annually and recognizes research achievement in chemistry or biochemistry. The deadline for nominations for each of these awards has been changed to January 15 of the year that the award is given.
I will be updating the mailing list for soliciting nominations and will put this list on a database. I need volunteers to serve as part of the judging committee for these awards. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please contact me.
Director for Student Awards Lily Ng
As I start my second term as Director for Student Awards, I wish to thank all the Iotans who have served on the Student Awards Committees in the last three years. I also wish to thank the nominators and nominees for all their efforts. The nominees have been all outstanding and the Award Committees have often wish that we have more awards to give out. |

For this second term, I hope to increase the visibility of the Gladys Anderson Emerson Scholarship. This scholarship of $1000 is awarded to an Iotan majoring in chemistry or biochemistry, having attained junior standing and must have at least one full term of work to complete as of August following the announcement (April 15). Therefore, a senior graduating in the December after the announcement date will qualify. Since the nomination has to be made by a member of Iota Sigma Pi, I urge each Iotan to nominate an outstanding student. Please continue to nominate students for the Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Chemistry and the Anna Louise Hoffman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Research as well. These awards attract nominations from all the excellent universities and colleges in the nation and being nominated is already an honor. However, we do not wish to overlook any qualified student.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the contributors to the Awards Fund. It is support like this that strengthens our organization and helps us recognize and encourage our younger future colleagues. Please make a contribution to the Awards Fund if you can. The awards do make a significant impact in the students lives. Thank you!
Immediate Past President Linda C. Brazdil
I first want to thank all of you for your support during the past Triennium. I enjoyed getting to know many more of you personally. I am thankful for the opportunity I had to serve you and
work with you to advance the goals of Iota Sigma Pi. I particularly want to thank the members of National Council for their hard work and dedication. I also want to thank those who headed special task forces and worked on the Iota Sigma Pi web page. Without your help, we would not have accomplished nearly as much as we did these past three years.
I also want to express my gratitude to the members of the Promethium Chapter for hosting our Convention in Portland. It was a tremendously successful and enjoyable meeting. Everyone who worked on the organization and implementation of the Convention did a wonderful job. It takes a large amount of time and effort to organize the facilities, events, and arrangements for the Convention, and we owe all the those who worked on it a debt of gratitude.
My primary duty in this next Triennium is to chair the Nominations Committee. I will be seeking nominees for the 2002-2005 National Council. Please contact me if you are interested in becoming a member of National Council or know someone who you think would make a good member of National Council. I have served on National Council for the past nine years, and I have found it to be a challenging and rewarding experience. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Iota Sigma Pi members and work to advance women in chemistry and related fields.
This Triennium will be an exciting time as we look toward the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of our organization. As we look forward to our Centennial Celebration, let us commit ourselves to continue to work together to advance women scientists in the 21st century. We each
need to do only a small part, because together our many small parts will add up to produce a large impact.

1999 Professional Awardees Honored at Convention
|
The three winners of the 1999 Iota Sigma Pi professional awards were honored at the Triennial Convention in Portland. Barry and Vercellotti received their award and gave a presentation on her work to the convention. Makri was presented her award earlier.
Dr. Bridgette A. Barry National Honorary Member
Dr. Bridgette A. Barry received an A.B. in Chemistry with High Honors from Oberlin College in 1978 and a Ph.D., in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. From 1985-88 she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Michigan State University. Dr. Barry accepted a faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry in the College of Biological Science at the University of Minnesota in 1988 where she is still employed. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and to Professor in 1999.
Dr. Barry's research on the photochemistry of biological molecules and resonance Raman microscopy began with her Ph.D. dissertation on the vertebrate visual pigments. Since that time she has worked to elucidate the mechanisms of biological energy coupling, particularly how electrochemical gradients are generated and utilized in cell membranes. The broad spectrum of techniques comrnonly used in her laboratory include purification, isolation and reconstitution of membrane proteins, site directed mutations and isotopic labeling of proteins and pigments, EPR, FT-IR, and fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. She and her collaborators have applied these techniques to the light driven reactions of photosynthesis, most recently the photosystem II reaction center enzymes and cofactors. Dr. Barry also studies transport proteins, most recently lactose permiase, in the hopes of understanding more about the mechanism of chemiosmotic coupling in cell membranes. |
Dr. Barry's research group is diverse as well. She currently has four postdoctoral associates, three graduate students, one rotation student and one undergraduate research student. Dr. Barry teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. Her graduate courses include parts of a spectroscopy course and a membrane course. Dr. Barry designed a new syllabus for the undergraduate majors Biochemistry course and plans to participate in the development of a new physical biochemistry course for undergraduate students. Dr. Barry has been named the 1999 National Honorary Member of lota Sigma Pi. This is the highest honor bestowed by ISP.

two year fellowship at Harvard. In the spring of 1992, she accepted a faculty position at the University of Illinois where she is currently a Professor of Chemistry.
Dr. Makri has been presented with a number of awards and honors, including the prestigious National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award in 1993, the Annual Medal of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science in 1995 and a Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award in 1997 among others before being named an Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award recipient.
Author of over 50 publications, Dr. Makri is well known for her research in Theoretical Quantum Dynamics. She has specialized in the theoretical understanding of quantum mechanical processes in large molecules and in condensed phases. The Schroedinger Equation can only be solved exactly for small molecules. Dr. Makri and her group have developed new theoretical descriptions and simulation methods to overcome this limitation. These methods to study proton and electron transfer reactions and relaxation processes in biological systems.
Dr. Makri was nominated for the Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award specifically for her work with photosynthesis and the charge transfer reactions which occur in photosynthetic systems. These systems are not well characterized, and Dr. Makri's work has contributed substantially to an understanding of them. Dr. Makri was unable to attend the Triennial Convention because of a conflict with a theoretical chemistry meeting at which she was a speaker. Her award was presented for us at the conference by one of the conference organizers. |
